The Electrical Engineer maintains and repairs all onboard electrical systems, operates emergency equipment, ensures safety compliance, reports issues to the Chief Engineer, and follows company and class regulations.

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Responsible for the maintenance and repair of electrical systems onboard as directed by the Chief Electrical Engineer.
  • Must have a good knowledge of all the electrical systems onboard.
  • Responsible for reporting any concerns with the electrical systems to the Chief Electrical Engineer.
  • Be familiar with the ships electrical Emergency and Safety Systems. Must be able to operate the Emergency Generator and Emergency Switchboard.
  • Be familiar with the operation of the Main Generators and the Main Switchboards.
  • Must know the location of all the major distribution panels, in order to be able to shut down power in the event of any failures, fire or maintenance work.
  • The Electrical Engineer must be familiar with safety routines and ensure that the necessary safeguards are in place before any maintenance/repair work commences.
  • Awareness of Class Rules and industry standards and the implications of any modifications to the electrical system.
  • Must be familiar with the Safety Management System including his/her responsibilities in the Safety Organization according to the Emergency Plan and Station Bill.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned or as directed. The omission of specific duties does not preclude the supervisor from assigning duties that are logically related to the position.
  • Must be familiar with the Safety and Environmental Protection Policy and the SMS, and carry out the policies and procedures appropriate for his/her position.
  • Must be able to efficiently maintain electrical equipment and not use unnecessary spare parts.
  • Assumes all duties deemed necessary by the Chief Electrical Engineer.
  • Initiates and maintains effective employee relations at all times.

 

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Minimum of two (2) years prior experience working as an electrical technician is required.
  • Intermediate to Advanced level English verbal and writing skills, including the proper use of English grammar is required.
  • Basic to Intermediate knowledge of electronic equipment and systems is required.
  • Intermediate to Advanced level of proficiency in electronic trouble shooting and solving electronic problems is required.

The incumbent must be able to work in a multi-cultural environment; also, must be able to adjust to changes in schedules, assignments and deadlines.

 

EDUCATION

  • Bachelor's Degree or Technical Diploma from an accredited Maritime Academy or equivalent is required.
  • Position-specific STCW training from an accredited educational institution is required.
