Overview

URC is seeking an experienced Internal Medicine Specialist for an anticipated opportunity to support the design and implementation of the Belize Quality and Efficiency Improvement Strategy (QEIS). The Specialist will contribute technical expertise to strengthen clinical protocols, guidelines, and tools in internal medicine, with a focus on non-communicable diseases and integrated hospital services. The role will ensure the application of international best practices, promote quality and patient safety, and build local capacity through mentorship and collaboration with Belize’s Ministry of Health and Wellness (MOHW).

 

Responsibilities

  • Provide technical leadership in internal medicine for the QEIS program, with a focus on non-communicable diseases (cardiovascular disease, hypertension, diabetes, breast and cervical cancer).
  • Lead the review, development, and adaptation of clinical protocols, guidelines, algorithms, and tools to improve patient care and system efficiency.
  • Work closely with the MOHW, hospital managers, and clinical teams to standardize and optimize internal medicine practices.
  • Support capacity building of healthcare providers through training, mentorship, and workshops.
  • Ensure integration of international best practices, evidence-based care, and patient safety standards into local health services.
  • Contribute to the monitoring and evaluation of internal medicine practices, including the development of performance metrics and feedback mechanisms.
  • Provide technical input into the design and implementation of quality improvement interventions at facility and system levels.
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to ensure alignment across clinical and managerial processes.

 

Qualifications and Experience

  • Medical Doctor (MD) with specialization in Internal Medicine.
  • Postgraduate degree (Master’s or PhD) in Cardiology or another related specialty/field is an asset.
  • Minimum of 3 years’ general clinical experience.
  • Demonstrated experience in the development of internal medicine protocols, guidelines, or tools in at least two projects of similar nature, or at least one year of related experience.
  • Proven ability to collaborate with ministries of health, hospitals, and clinical providers in strengthening service delivery.
  • Strong communication, training, and mentoring skills.
  • Experience in Latin America and the Caribbean health systems is desirable.
