Overview

URC is seeking a Belize-based Operating Theatre Specialist for an anticipated opportunity to provide technical assistance to the Belize Quality and Efficiency Improvement Strategy (QEIS). The Specialist will focus on strengthening surgical safety, operating theatre protocols, and infection prevention practices, ensuring alignment with national standards and international best practices. The role will contribute to improved patient outcomes and efficiency in surgical services.

 

Responsibilities

  • Provide technical expertise in surgical care and operating theatre management.
  • Support the development and standardization of OT protocols, checklists, registries, and SOPs.
  • Collaborate with QI teams to implement safety protocols and monitor compliance.
  • Conduct training and mentoring of theatre staff on surgical safety, patient monitoring, and infection control.
  • Contribute to the development of monitoring tools to assess OT efficiency and outcomes.
  • Work with Ministry of Health and Wellness and facility managers to integrate OT standards into quality improvement initiatives.

 

Qualifications and Experience

  • Medical Doctor or Specialist with training and experience in Surgery, Anesthesia, or Operating Theatre management.
  • Minimum of 3 years’ clinical experience in operating theatre or surgical services.
  • Demonstrated experience in development or implementation of OT protocols, SOPs, or safety tools.
  • Proven experience in capacity building and training of surgical/OT staff.
  • Knowledge of infection prevention and control practices in surgical settings.
  • Familiarity with Belize’s hospital system is strongly preferred.
  • Strong teamwork and communication skills.
