Under the direct supervision of the Chief Orderly or any other designated Supervisor, the Hospital Attendant (Porter) is a shift worker that is assigned to various departments of the hospital and provides support to the health professionals.

 

Qualifications and Experience:

  • Completion of Primary Education; 
  • Completion of Any certified training in Support Services in Healthcare or passes in at least two (2) CSEC subjects, would be a definite asset; 
  • Completion of hospital orientation, and moving, lifting, and handling of patients training.

Key responsibilities will include:

  • Reporting to the Chief Orderly/Designated Supervisor who deploys each Attendant to the necessary areas within the hospital where he will perform his duties as specified. 
  • Transporting patients to Out-patients’ clinics, Casualty, to the Wards, for laboratory and radiology services. This is done with wheelchairs and stretchers given the required situation. 
  • Assisting by lifting and supporting patients who are unable to walk. 
  • Assisting nursing staffing with lifting and turning of immobile in-patients.
  • Carrying out duties on the ambulance service periodically/when assigned.
  • Being on duty in his/her designated area (except when on break), so that he/she 
  • can be called by the Nurse, Doctor or any other member of staff, to assist in carrying out any function necessary for the benefit of patients and the organization. 
  • Delivering items from one area of the hospital to another. 
  • Assisting in maintaining the hospital buildings and compound by assisting in the cleaning of same. 
  • Emptying and cleaning all garbage receptacles and replacing them in their appropriate areas. 
  • Cleaning and keeping in good condition, all the tools he/she is assigned to work with eg. wheelchairs, stretchers, etc. 

 

SPECIAL CONDITIONS ASSOCIATED WITH THE JOB:

  • Normal hospital environment. 
  • Physically demanding environment, which requires the skills and ability to do heavy lifting, and safely manoeuvre patients, wheelchairs, trolleys and other equipment. 
  • Possible exposure to bodily fluids, exposure to body fluids and soiled utility, therefore use of protective gears maybe required in some instances.
  • Duties and assignments are on a shift basis, and the incumbent, may be required to work extended hours if the need arises.
