The Surgical Officer is expected to perform within the team at a level appropriate to a Senior House Officer or Surgical Intern and to participate in the care of patients, within any of the general hospital's areas.

 

Key responsibilities include:

Rota: The rota will reflect six (6) Surgical Officers working 186.33 hours per month and assigned to Specific Surgeons on a rotational basis. Surgical Officers must be available at all times during the scheduled rota working hours. These responsibilities supersede the attendance of CME lectures and other meetings. The rota for coverage for Surgical Officers on vacation will be circulated on a timely basis.

 

Standing Meetings:

  • Attend a weekly ward round with the Chief of Surgery
  • Attend a monthly general surgical meeting
  • Invited to attend the weekly CME lectures - subject to availability, given above duties
  • Invited to attend the monthly Trauma meeting (subject to availability, given above duties)
  • Each Surgical Officer is assigned to a group of Attending Surgeons and is responsible for the care of all the patients under their care, while as an inpatient.
  • Daily reviews patients, follows-up all investigations, assessments and management of assigned patients
  • Certification of deceased patients
  • If the assigned Surgical Officer is unavailable (i.e. in OR), any of the other Surgical Officers may be called upon to review patients. After hours and on weekends, the on-call Medical Officer will be called
  • All patients admitted, either via ER and/or as direct admission patients are examined, clerked and management initiated by the Surgical Officers. During regular working hours, the Surgical Officer assigned to the Attending Surgeon will clerk the patient and after hours the on-call Officer
  • Surgical Officers assist in all operations performed in the OR which require an assistant. If two surgeons from the same group require assistance, any other available Surgical Officer may be called to assist. The Surgical Officers first priority is assisting in the OR. Exception: attending an acutely ill patient on the Ward

 

Qualifications & Registration required:

  • An MD or suitable equivalent (MBBS or MBChB) from an accredited University
  • BCLS, ACLS and NRP
  • Minimum of two (2) years of Surgical training/experience

 

 

Registration with Bermuda Medical Council is mandatory.

This position is being advertised prior to contract renewals with a view to attracting suitably qualified Bermudians/Spouses of Bermudians & PRC Holders.
