The House Officer (Radiology) assesses and diagnoses patients, performs and supervises diagnostic imaging procedures (ultrasounds, interventional), writes preliminary reports, assists in surgeries, and ensures continuity of patient care.

 

NATURE & SCOPE

The House Officer (Radiology) is responsible for diagnosing and administering general medical treatment to patients in a hospital services or clinic. Work involves the examination of patients, diagnosing, advising and performing diagnostic studies or necessary treatment in the investigation of diseases or referring complicated cases for further professional attention. He/She performs under the general supervision of a professional superior who is available for consultation and is reviewed through observation, consultation and analysis of findings and reports.

 

SPECIFIC ACCOUNTABILITIES

The House Officer (Radiology):

  • Assesses the patients entering the hospital or Radiology Department and ensures an appropriate management plan is carried out while ordering and receiving appropriate investigations.
  • Reviews all patients with Senior Doctors and adjusts management plan accordingly.
  • Ensures continuity of care for all patients when appropriate.
  • Performs medical examination of police and suspected police (criminal) cases and writes the appropriate report.
  • Assists in operating theatre by performing simple interventional procedures, intraoperative ultrasounds and assists the Consultant in more complex interventional procedures.
  • Refers patients for further specialist care if needed.
  • Supervises contrast enhanced examinations within the Radiology Department and appropriately manages any contrast reaction or extravasation.
  • Performs ultrasound examinations under the supervision of a Sonographer or Radiologist.
  • Provides preliminary reports for Radiological investigations performed within the Department.
  • Reviews examinations with Radiographers and Sonographers to determine need for additional imaging.
  • Liaises with the Specialist Medical Officer for the planning and scheduling of interventional procedures and complex ultrasounds.
  • Makes recovery room rounds and reviews clinical state.
  • Attends to recovery room emergencies.
  • Takes blood for investigations.
  • Performs medical examinations of out-patients; diagnoses and makes prognoses; writes and maintains up-to-date case records and makes necessary medical reports.
  • Performs medical examinations and prescribes treatment.
  • Provides medical attention in an assigned area.
  • Performs related work as required by the approved Authority.

 

KEY KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

  • Knowledge of the principles and practices of medicine including the diagnosis of a variety of diseases and injuries.
  • Knowledge of principles and practices of preventative medicine.
  • Knowledge of Public Health Ordinance and of medical jurisprudence.
  • Ability to examine patients, diagnose diseases and to prescribe and administer necessary treatment.
  • Ability to gain confidence and co-operation of patients, and to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees and the public.

 

MINIMUM TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE

  • Training as evidenced by the possession of a MBBS from a recognized institution.
  • Successful completion of one year’s internship at a hospital.
  • Registration as a medical practitioner by the Medical Board of Trinidad and Tobago.
  • Research and Publications in the field of Radiology would be an asset.

  • Medical Interns – review all patients seen by them.
